Professional Profile:

Dr Cheong obtained his basic medical degree from the National University of Singapore in 1983, and subsequently became a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (Glasgow) in 1989. He completed his subspecialty training in colorectal surgery at the Singapore General Hospital and Cleveland Clinic Florida in 1991-1993.

Upon returning to Singapore, Dr Cheong was instrumental in the development of colorectal surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He held various appointments at the hospital, including Senior Consultant and Head of Colorectal Surgery, Director of the Digestive Disease Centre, and Visiting Consultant to other hospitals.

In addition to his work in Singapore, Dr Cheong has also pursued further training abroad. He was awarded HMDP fellowships to further develop his expertise in colorectal cancer surgery and laparoscopic colorectal

surgery, and did attachments at hospitals in the UK, Sweden, and Australia.

Dr Cheong’s extensive experience and training enable him to manage a wide range of conditions, including anal conditions such as hemorrhoids, fistulas, and fissures, as well as colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and diverticular disease. He also treats general surgical conditions such as skin lumps, lipomas, hernias, and gallstones.

Apart from his clinical work, Dr Cheong has been actively involved in teaching both undergraduate and junior doctors as a Senior Clinical Lecturer and examiner for the NUS School of Medicine. He has also participated in humanitarian projects, including a relief mission to Turkey in 1999.
